One Zone Dead, Rest Fine? Run This 90-Second Test First

Why One Dead Zone Is the Easiest Call to Diagnose Yourself

A controller with eleven working zones and one dead one is not a mystery — it's a pointer. Whatever failed is local to that valve, not to the system, and there's a test you can run in the yard, by hand, with no tools and no license, that splits the possible causes into two clean piles before anyone gets dispatched. It takes about ninety seconds. Most homeowners who call around Houston asking about a dead zone have never been told this test exists, which is a little strange given how much it saves everyone.

The Ninety-Second Test

Every irrigation valve has a manual way to open it that bypasses the electric solenoid entirely. Find the valve box for the dead zone, pop the lid, and do one of the following:

  1. Step 1: Locate the solenoid — the small cylinder with two wires coming out of the top of the valve.
  2. Step 2: Either loosen the bleed screw at the base of the solenoid a quarter turn (water will trickle, not spray) or twist the whole solenoid counterclockwise about a quarter turn to open it manually. Different valve brands favor one method over the other; either works.
  3. Step 3: Watch the heads on that zone for the next 20–30 seconds.

If the zone comes on when you open it by hand, the valve diaphragm, the mainline pressure, and everything downstream to the heads are all fine. The fault is electrical — a bad solenoid coil, a corroded splice out in the field where wires join, or a dead output on the controller board. If the zone stays silent even with the valve forced open, the problem is hydraulic: grit lodged under the diaphragm, a torn diaphragm, or water simply not reaching that valve at all. If It's Electrical: What a Healthy Solenoid Looks Like

If the manual test says electrical, a multimeter across the two solenoid wires should read somewhere around 20 to 60 ohms of resistance on a healthy coil, depending on manufacturer. A reading of zero means a short, infinite or wildly high means an open coil, and either one confirms the solenoid itself is the part to replace — a low-cost fix, not a valve replacement. One Very Different Case: All Zones Dead at Once

If every single zone refuses to run, the manual bypass test still works station by station, but don't waste an evening running it twelve times. Twelve valves failing on the same night is not a real pattern. Almost every Houston-area controller wires all zones to one shared common wire, and a break, corrosion, or a loose connection on that single wire will take down the entire system in one shot and look, from the front, exactly like universal catastrophic failure. When the Test Points to Hydraulics

A valve that won't open even by hand, or opens and produces no flow at the heads, usually means the trouble is downstream or upstream of the valve itself — a clogged filter screen, a closed isolation valve somewhere in the line, or in less common cases a break in the buried lateral feeding that zone. If water is reaching the valve box fine but never making it past, that's a plumbing issue in the pipe, not an electrical one, and it's covered under buried pipe repair.
