This is the highest-value ten minutes available to a Houston homeowner with a sprinkler system, measured in dollars per minute. It prevents the single most expensive routine repair the trade has. It requires no tools beyond scissors and tape, and the materials cost less than a takeaway.
Everything on this page depends on one thing being done before any of it: the assembly has to be empty. Insulation slows heat loss; it does not generate heat. Wrapping a body that is still full of water is wrapping insulation around the thing that cracks the casting, and through a long freeze it delays the failure rather than preventing it.
So: close the isolation valve below the assembly, then open both test cocks and set the two shutoff handles part way so water drains out and air gets in behind it. Give it a couple of minutes. Then wrap.
Split foam tube sized to the exposed riser pipe, on both the vertical up to the assembly and any horizontal beyond it. Slide it on, tape the seam. Pipe is easier to protect than the body because it is a simple shape, and it is the part most people forget entirely.
Fibreglass batt offcut, an old towel, foam board, or a purpose-made insulated backflow pouch. The purpose-made ones are worth the money if the assembly is going to be wrapped every year for a decade — they fit, they close properly, and they do not need rebuilding each November.
A heavy bin liner or a tarp scrap, taped so rain runs off rather than in. This layer exists because wet insulation is not insulation. Fibreglass or a towel that has taken two inches of rain in December is a cold, saturated blanket, and it will hold that water against the brass for days.
A plastic bag alone traps condensation against the metal and does nothing thermally. Foil-faced bubble wrap alone is thin and moves. Wrapping tightly in cling film is the worst of both. And a decorative rock or a plastic cover with open sides is a wind break, not insulation — useful in a light frost, irrelevant in a hard freeze.
Wrapping a live, pressurized assembly. If the isolation valve is left open, the assembly stays full and connected to street pressure, and any expansion has to be absorbed by the casting. Insulation buys hours. A hard freeze that arrives at midnight and lasts until nine the next morning will find the assembly whichever way it is wrapped.
Sealing the air inlet permanently and then forgetting. A pressure vacuum breaker needs its air inlet open to atmosphere to work. That is fine while the system is shut down for the winter, and it is not fine in April when the wrap has been left in place, the isolation valve has been reopened, and the assembly is being asked to function through a bin liner. Put a note in the calendar for late February. It is a small thing that ends up being the difference between a system that is protected and one that is quietly broken.
It works, and it is what commercial sites often use on large assemblies. On a residential system it introduces an outdoor electrical circuit that has to be correctly rated, correctly protected and actually plugged in, and it fails silently during exactly the event that causes the power to go out — which in February 2021 was the whole point. For a residential pressure vacuum breaker, draining and wrapping is more reliable and considerably cheaper.
The number that matters is not the forecast low, it is how many consecutive hours the assembly spends below freezing. A brief dip to thirty-one degrees an hour before sunrise rarely does damage. A night that sits in the low twenties for eight or nine hours, or a multi-day event, is what splits castings. Since forecasts give days of warning, the practical rule is simply to have it wrapped from November and not to make the judgement call at all.
No. Leave it wrapped and the system shut down for the whole winter, and take it off in late February. Taking a wrap on and off around individual forecast events is how it ends up not being on during the one that matters.
They are below grade and generally fine. The exception is a box that stands full of water with a valve sitting in it — that water can freeze and crack a valve body. It is much rarer than backflow damage, and the permanent fix is drainage in the box rather than insulation over it.
